Melvin Rook

Melvin Rook is a technology leader, software engineer and entrepreneur based in The Hague, the Netherlands. Career

Advertising technology and Wonderkind

Rook served as CTO at mobile advertising technology company MADS and later became Head of Architecture at Adform. At Adform, his remit included engineering practices, frameworks and the relationship between technology and information leadership. He subsequently joined recruitment advertising company Wonderkind, initially as interim CTO and then in a permanent CTO role.[4]

In Treblle’s August 2022 interview, he discussed API documentation, observability and the challenges of growing an engineering organisation.[4]

Funxtion

By August 2023, Rook was CTO of digital fitness company Funxtion. In an interview published by the company, he described work on an open API, a renewed member app and software development kits that let other developers incorporate Funxtion’s services into their applications.[5]

The interview also addressed artificial intelligence in fitness, personalised member experiences and the combination of connected hardware with cloud software. Rook emphasised easier integration and onboarding as priorities for the platform.[5]

Techflection and VaultN

After his work at Funxtion, Rook announced a move into fractional CTO work through Techflection, offering strategic technology leadership on a subscription basis. Techflection describes its services as including consultancy, technical due diligence, architecture and the development of nearshore and offshore engineering teams.[7][1]

As of September 2026, public professional listings associate Rook with VaultN and identify him as its chief technology officer. VaultN develops infrastructure for digital game distribution, connecting publishers, distributors and retailers through transactions involving game keys and activations.[3][6][8]

Products and ventures

Rook also co-founded Fitsociety, a venture connecting athletes and coaches, and founded TechTeamFinder, a service for discovering and comparing software development teams and agencies.[4][2][9]

Work Type Focus

A Jira Cloud app for classifying work and showing how a team’s effort is distributed. It groups issues into five work types, including unplanned work, managing complexity, improvements to existing capabilities, new capabilities and experimentation. The app includes work-mix views and comparisons across teams and time periods.[10]

Calibration Framework

A people-review application for HR teams, partners and team leads. It combines guided evaluations with a 3 × 3 talent grid and brings together performance, potential, core values and retention risk. The product also supports succession planning and comparisons across review years.[11]

PromptPlanner

A native macOS application for organising reusable AI prompts, project goals and unfinished tasks. Prompts are arranged as cards within project lanes, with clipboard copying, recurring templates and local activity analytics. Its workflow is designed to support work across different AI assistants and development tools.[12]

Writing and visualizations

Rook publishes a public notebook on Techflection covering engineering leadership, work allocation, delivery trade-offs and team development. Its recurring themes include clarity of responsibility, early releases and the relationship between technical work and business priorities.[1]

In his May 2026 article Are you below the AI or above the AI?, he argues that architecture, verification, orchestration and human judgement become more significant as AI takes on more execution. The article places AI within a longer history of software abstraction, from low-level programming to platforms and cloud services.[13]

His visualization collection presents ideas about software development, leadership and AI as individual visual essays. The collection includes diagrams about release frequency, the distribution of human and AI coding work, leadership language and root-cause analysis.[14]
